The Migrant Kitchen Initiative believes, now more than ever, that we have a responsibility to lift-up the most vulnerable members of our communities. Migrants from around the world come together in their global kitchens to share their stories and cultures through healthy, delicious meals that are served to the food insecure in communities around the world.

Birthed out of a need to feed the most vulnerable during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic in New York City, Migrant Kitchen Initiative started out as a small group of restaurant industry friends wanting to make the most of their time and food reserve while the city went on pause.

What began as meals for friends and family in a pinch quickly grew into New York's largest restaurant quality active cooking operation during the pandemic, serving nearly 10,000 meals a day to food insecure communities across the city.

As the hunger crisis continued to worsen in the wake of lost jobs and limited resources, it had become clear that services like theirs were needed now more than ever. Their work continued to evolve taking them to over 23 cities across 3 countries in 2 continents serving over 2.5 million meals in 2020 with 1 single mission - providing access to healthy meals to anyone in need.

By continuing to mobilise the global hospitality workforce and the immigrant communities that are its backbone, they are determined to feed as many people as possible. Because "no one goes hungry on our watch."

"No one goes hungry on our watch."

The future of food powered by immigrants. Influenced by cultures and cuisines from across the world, The Migrant Kitchen's food is cooked with a variety of ingredients, but none more important than purpose.

The Migrant Kitchen believes that everyone deserves to eat well, so they bring their globally inspired food to all - from busy professionals in search of a quick delicious bite to food insecure families looking for a steady source of high quality healthy meals.

By offering all their workers more than a minimum wage and meaningful opportunities for growth, they aim to prove that we can and must do more to ensure that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic or citizenship status, are served equal portions of opportunity.

Buy a meal, give a meal.

For every $12 spent at The Migrant Kitchen, the organisation is able to donate a meal to a New Yorker in need through TMK Initiative. They serve the same restaurant quality food to those in need as they do to those who visit their store locations and they pride themselves in preparing meals that are culturally appropriate for the community in which they are serving.

In addition to meals donated to New Yorkers in need through their Buy A Meal Give A Meal program, TMK Initiative actively provides meals to food insecure communities around the globe.

What started as two friends catering office lunches and private events around New York City quickly evolved into something much bigger. This is the story of how they went from migrating from kitchen to kitchen to feeding the city as The Migrant Kitchen.

In October 2019, two friends - Nas and Dan - teamed up to create The Migrant Kitchen: a long-dreamt-of catering business that focused on providing meaningful opportunities for immigrants to showcase the cuisines and cultures of their home countries while earning more than just minimum wage. In doing so, they had absolutely no idea (like any of us) that a little thing called COVID-19 was about to flip the world as they knew it completely upside down.

Once COVID hit NYC, Nas and Dan quickly pivoted from a standard catering operation to serving food to frontline healthcare workers fighting against the pandemic. As COVID continued to change the way we lived and ate, their operation quickly grew into something much greater. Within the next few months, TMK was serving over 60,000 meals a week to food insecure communities across NYC.

There's no stopping here.

While the end of the pandemic is in sight, they've learned that they have a much longer way to go before we see an end to the hunger crisis. In an effort to continue to fight food insecurity, for every meal purchased at The Migrant Kitchen, they donate a meal to someone in need through their non-profit arm, TMK Initiative.

Whether it's empowering immigrants to earn a meaningful living or feeding essential workers fighting to keep the city safe, they will strive to always look out for those who need help the most. "No one goes hungry on our watch."
