Loved Clothes Last: How to Care for Your Activewear

We've partnered with Jeeves, London's finest dry cleaners, with locations around the world including New York, to give you tips on how to care for your activewear.

How to Properly Clean and Treat Activewear

  • First, check the care label to determine if your garment is washable. If your garment is dry clean only, do not attempt at home remedies or proceed with caution.
  • Inspect your garment! If there are any sweat stains on your washable garment, try and get out as much as you can with cold water. This will prevent it from setting deeper into the fabric.
  • If sweat stains are still present in your garment after cleaning with cold water, mix up the following solution prior to washing:
    • 1 cup lukewarm water
    • 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent (not laundry detergent)
    • 1 tablespoon ammonia
    • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • Apply this solution to the sweat stain site and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  • Wash the garment on the hottest water setting to ensure the lifting of the entire stain.
  • Repeat if needed to ensure that the entire stain is gone BEFORE drying. If you dry the garment before the sweat stain has been completely removed, the stain will set permanently.
  • We recommend drying activewear on a low setting or air drying.

Removing Body Oder Scents:

Getting out the body oder smell may require a little more skill than a pre-treatment and home wash can provide. If you go through the process of cleaning and notice that there's still a smell, albeit a slight one, bring it to your local cleaner before putting it in the dryer!

Additional Tips:

  • Never put a garment away with a spill on it. To prevent yellow stains from occurring, we recommend that prior to putting garments that have been worn away for the season, please clean them.
  • Any garment that is worn on a particularly hot day, that has gotten "sweaty", should be washed or dry-cleaned as soon as practical. This will remove the ammonia and prevent the fabric and dye from damage.

If the average life of clothing was extended by just three months, it would reduce their carbon and water footprints, as well as waste generation, by 5 to 10 percent.
